Back in the day I was making edible holiday gifts for everyone I knew and constantly trying new recipes. My mom loved these nuts so much that she bought them from me to give to her friends and she’s the one who submitted this recipe to be printed in our family cookbook.

That’s what I call a recipe that has stood the test of time. Those are the kind of recipes you want to keep.

Hot and Spicy Mixed Nuts Gluten Free

Gluten free shoppers in my area are happy to see products from the Canadian brand Royal Nuts. All their products are labeled gluten free (and peanut free!). Finally, I no longer have to hunt for gluten free pumpkin seeds.

I walk by huge displays of Royal Nuts at every grocery store I go to but they are also available on Amazon Canada - Royal Nuts. U.S. readers can see their products on their website royalnuts.ca.

    Homemade Worcestershire Sauce

When I started cooking gluten free it wasn’t so easy to find gluten free Worcestershire sauce in Canada. The most popular brand, Lea & Perrins, was gluten free in the US but not in Canada. One of the many things you learn about food manufacturing when you’re living gluten free.

If you’ve been gluten free for a week you quickly learn you can make anything. One more week and you know that no one wants to make everything.

When I needed Worcestershire Sauce I just found a recipe, tweaked it to my liking and ten years later I’m still making it. When I share the recipe I say, “You can make it in less time that it takes to run to the store.”

If you're the one who needs that recipe, you'll find it HERE or watch this video.

    Eat Before You Go

If you're a celiac you know what Eat Before You Go means. It's a wheat filled world out there and seasoned celiacs know that sometimes Eat Before You Go is the best strategy. With a little thought you can adopt this idea. I guarantee it's better than grabbing a bar on your way out the door. The last thing anyone needs is to arrive at a food focused event feeling cranky and a little hungry.

Here are some tips for an Eat Before You Go strategy.

    • Create your ideal plan but be flexible. It won't work every time.
    • Intentionally wrap individual portions of your favourite comfort food for the freezer. You don't need variety, just something you really enjoy but for some reason you don't eat it often.
    • These meals can be eaten at home or taken with you so put in the effort. For me it would be lasagne.
    • Buy the exact container(s) for this purpose, maybe one that separates individual items.

My new idea for this strategy is charcuterie for one! It almost sounds decadent and that's what makes it perfect, especially if you’re the only one eating before you go. Use my printable guide from this post, How To Build A Charcuterie Board, selecting three choices from each category (or as close as you can get to that). Variety is the key and a full plate is what you're going for.

Don't forget the Hot and Spicy Mixed Nuts!

You need nothing more than a baking sheet and some parchment to make my Hot and Spicy Mixed Nuts. I have two sets of two pans, one set for cooking all things savoury and a second set for non-garlic baking only. Once you take the time to make some nice dessert, and it has a hint of garlic you'll know what I mean.

For those of you who are able to learn from other people's mistakes, just buy the baking sheets.

I like things sweet too. Where may I add some maple syrup?

Oh that sounds yummy Alene! I would start by adding 1 Tbsp maple syrup right in with all the other ingredients. My mom has a sweet tooth so she would probably say start with 2 Tbsp. Let me know what you do and how they turn out.

Delighted! Not overly spiced. Just perfect with 2 tablespoons of maple syrup, it took care of my sweet needs! A great combination of flavors. Thank you!

Perfect! I'm adding that as an optional ingredient to the recipe because some days I would love that too. Thanks for getting back to me with that tip Alene!
