Description

Homemade turkey tacos are not too out of the ordinary but they can be. Think about filling these soft tortillas with pork carnitas, sautéed shrimp, battered or fried fish…need I say more? Don’t limit yourself to ground beef and a hard, store bought taco shell. Use your imagination and celebrate Taco Tuesday more often. Don’t tell your kids it’s your favourite dinner too!

Masa Harina vs Maseca

I wrote a post with step by step instructions for making corn tortillas using masa harina. Maseca is the brand of masa harina I use and I notice some recipes list Maseca as the ingredient. No matter what brand you use you will soon recognize the heavenly aroma of fresh corn tortillas. I highly recommend you give it a try.

Get The Tools & Organize for Success

Your set up, or lack of one, is the barrier! So collect all the parts, get them together and start making homemade tortillas.

Now I can pull out that bucket and quickly make tortillas whenever I want.

Taco Fillings

Ground turkey or chicken is an easy substitute for the usual ground beef. Fish tacos are a welcome change too (have you mastered the technique for battered fish yet?). I also use plain fried fish, sautéed shrimp, and even leftovers from this Cumin Lime Chicken. If it feels like your kids are always asking for tacos…like three times a week, introduce more variety to make taco night enjoyable for everyone.

The spice mixture for tacos is made with spices you probably already have in your pantry. Rather than store another combination of spices (and look for a store bought spice mix that is gluten free) I just make it. It is another little job but you know there are no fillers in the mixture. I make this homemade spice mix and keep the jar with my spices. When the bottle is empty I leave it on the counter and do that little job of mixing the spices at a different time. I also have the recipe taped to the bottle so I don’t need to look for it.

For kids learning about allergy awareness and foods that contain gluten a little bottle of taco spice mix is a thoughtful homemade gift for a friend. No additives, no preservatives, no gluten. A small step toward allergy awareness.

Taco Toppings

Everyone loves chipotle mayo and on top of tacos is the ideal place for it. Try this homemade chipotle mayo and you’ll never use store bought again. It’s easy to make and will last in the fridge for weeks…but when put in a squeeze bottle it’ll disappear fast.
