    Homemade Caramel Sauce

This easy homemade caramel sauce recipe is quick to make. Whether you need a late night treat, something for the kids to do or a last minute teacher gift, this caramel sauce just might be the answer. Of course you can buy gluten free caramel sauce, but just because you can doesn't mean you should. This is a three ingredient recipe you can make in less time than it takes to run to the store.

A jar of Homemade Caramel Sauce wrapped and labelled for a gift; beside a sauce boat with caramel sauce on a ladle dripping back into the dish. this gluten free recipe

I serve this sauce on Sticky Date Pudding, Baked Stuffed Apples, homemade pumpkin ice cream, and salted caramel cheesecake cupcakes. I bet you can think of ten more places to use it too!

    Ingredients

Using brown sugar eliminates the step of caramelizing white sugar, the step where you might burn it and have to start over. This is the simple no-fail recipe every gluten free kid should be able to make.

    • Brown sugar - I use golden brown sugar.
    • Whipping cream - This makes a rich and creamy sauce.
    • Butter - For the perfect combination of fat and sweet. It's dangerous.

See recipe card for exact amounts.

    Instructions

You can make this in less than 10 minutes. Just stay there and watch the magic so it doesn't burn. If it burns, start over and don't do it twice.

    Variations

Bourbon Caramel Sauce - This spectacular Bourbon Caramel Pumpkin Tart has bourbon caramel sauce as the top layer. If that tweaks your interest, well that is a variation of caramel sauce.

Flavouring - If bourbon is a little too much for you try adding vanilla extract, coffee or a spice like cinnamon.

7 Ways to Serve Caramel Sauce

The possibilities for caramel sauce are endless. Here are a few of my favourites:

A platter of stuffed Baked Apples with Caramel Sauce drizzled on top.
Aa piece of Gluten Free Sticky Date Pudding on a plate with caramel sauce dripping down the sides topped with whipped cream and a strawberry.
    • Spooned over homemade pumpkin ice cream, your favourite gluten free brownies or a salted caramel cookie extravagana.
    • As a topping for a gluten free mug cake.
    • Drizzled over Banana Bundt Cake or even my favourite banana muffins, just because sometimes gooey is fun!
    • Add a dot to these mini gluten free cheesecake cupcakes with a few flakes of salt for an impressive dessert.
    • One spoonful right out of the jar when no one is looking. (No double dipping!)
Gluten free Salted Caramel Cheesecake Cupcakes on tiny spoons with fancy jewelled handles.
Banana Bundt Cake on a pedestal tray drizzled with Chocolate Glaze and topped with banana slices.

    Storage

If you have a House Rule, like No Double Dipping, this caramel sauce can be kept in the fridge for months. But don't wait that long. Find more ways to use it and keep it moving.

    Top Tip: Give Edible Gifts

Teachers, neighbours and friends all love edible gifts. This homemade caramel sauce can be poured right into one-cup Mason jars as soon as you make it. Pop the jar into a clear cellophane bag and tie it up with pretty ribbon. Add a handwritten note and you've got a thoughtful gift for someone special.

Gluten free cooks need recipes like this 3-ingredient sauce. It makes a delicious last minute gift, can give anything the salted-caramel treatment, or simply enjoyed on ice cream.

Hi there. Can I use half and half instead of whipping cream?

You sure can use half and half Theresa. It will still be sweet and caramel-y and you'll love it. Thanks for asking and happy cooking.

Thanks for letting me know that substitute Kathy. I don't think I would have thought to use sour cream but of course, the sugar covers up the sour. Enjoy!
